Fuel Saving Strategies
Gas prices have been surging like crazy so we decided to share with you our 6 fuel saving strategies:
FUEL EFFICIENCY
Choose a fuel-efficient vehicle. See how many kilometers your car travels for each liter of gas. Consider going electric by doing a price comparison.
CHECK APPS FOR FUEL PRICES
GAS BUDDY displays fuel prices in your area which helps you to find the best deal in town or plan your road trip effectively to maximize your savings on fuel. You can download the app on your phone. WAZE and CAA apps (if you are a member) offer similar features.
COMBINE PETROL LOYALTY PROGRAMS WITH CASHBACK CREDIT CARD
Just to give you an example. Petro Canada has a partnership with RBC credit card.
1L = 10 Petro points. 1000 Petro points = 1$. So to get your 1$ cash back, you would need to fuel up 100L. However, when combining an RBC credit card when paying for your fuel with a Petro Canada Loyalty Card, you earn 3 cents on every litre, meaning you would only need around 33L to gain the 1$ return.
If you enjoy shopping at Canadian Tire, Atmosphere or Sportcheck, consider fueling at Gas+ using the TRIANGLE loyalty program. You can earn 3cents back for every litre of fuel you buy which is the same return as Petro points combined with RBC. To maximize your value you can pay for gas at Gas+ with a Triangle Mastercard which will result in (a save of) 5cents per litre.
Other examples of cards that offer decent cashback on gas are CIBC Dividend Visa Infinite Card (4%) or TD Cashback Visa Infinite (3%). They are free for the first year. After that, you need to pay an annual fee of approx. 100$.
CONSIDER DRIVING LESS
Find a way to use your car less. Walk more or utilize a bicycle. It will keep you fit plus it’s better for the environment. Alternatively, make use of public transport, rideshare apps or electric scooters. Remember that cars decrease in value over time, not to mention the cost of maintenance, parking tickets, fines, and insurance.
MAKE SURE YOUR TIRES ARE INFLATED AT THE PROPER PRESSURE
Underinflated tires decrease your fuel economy. An NHTSA study revealed that every 1% decrease in tire pressure correlated to a 0.3% reduction in fuel economy.
REDUCE UNNECESSARY WEIGHT
The heavier your carload, the more fuel it burns. If that’s not a good enough reason yet to get rid of your clutter in the car, I can give you a few more. Cleaning your space makes you feel better, promotes clarity of mind and increases the ability to focus and be productive. 🙂
